Mavs bounce back with win

Moeller comes up clutch from line

MONMOUTH, Ore. — Minnesota State University took a school-record 54 free throws Thursday en route to a 73-66 men's basketball win over Western Oregon in the Best Western Holiday Classic.

Jamel Staten led the Mavericks with 21 points. He was 8 of 14 from the line and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Western Oregon committed 35 fouls during the game and MSU had 24.

The Mavs were 34 of 54 from the free-throw line. Andy Moeller made 8 of 15 foul shots to finished with 10 points for MSU.

Teammate Luke Anderson tallied 14 points and was 2 for 5 from 3-point range.

Western Oregon's Kevin Tyner led all scorers with 23 points. Teammate Dave Grautigan had 17 points and Evan Kieling scored 14.

The Mavericks trailed 39-38 early in the second half before going on a 14-2 run.

Western Oregon never got closer than four points the rest of the way. The host squad cut the lead to 70-64 with 13 seconds to play, but Moeller hit three free throws in the closing seconds to ice the win.

MSU shot 43 percent from the field (18 for 22) and Western Oregon shot 36.5 percent (23 of 63).

The win improves MSU's record to 13-1.
