Common Read 2013-2014
Strength in What Remains by Tracy Kidder
According to Kidder’s website about the book, Strength in What Remains is the true story of a young man named Deo and his will to survive. Deo grew up in the mountains of Burundi, and he survived a civil war and genocide before seeking a new life in America. In New York City, he lived homeless in Central Park before finding his way to Columbia University. But according to the author, Deo’s story really begins with his will to turn his life into something truly remarkable; he returns to his native country to help people there, as well as people in the United States.
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Kidder discussed his book, Strength
in What Remains, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, in Minnesota
State University, Mankato’s Centennial Student Union ballroom in the opening
event of the university’s annual common read program.
Kidder’s presentation was free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public. A book signing followed his presentation. Attendees did not need to have read the book to enjoy this presentation.
All students were invited to read Strength in What Remains before the start of 2013-’14 classes. Minnesota State Mankato staff members worked with the Blue Earth County and North Mankato Taylor libraries and several other organizations to bring about community participation. The book is available in a variety of formats (hardcover, paperback, e-Book and audio) at various locations, including the Minnesota State Mankato Memorial Library as well as local public libraries and bookstores.
