Students are expected to audition for acceptance into the major on an individual basis by prior arrangement with the Department of Music Office. Acceptance into the major also requires a diagnostic theory exam. Students auditioning for a music scholarship are considered for the music major or minor through that audition.
Vocal Auditions: Prepare a song that would be appropriate for contest. An accompanist will be provided. (If you are unsure of appropriate repertory, consult your choir director).
Instrumental Auditions: Prepare two contrasting sections of a solo, solos, or etudes. (Consult your band or orchestra director if you are unsure of appropriate repertory).
BM in Piano Performance: Prepare three memorized contrasting works from different historical periods. Please bring a list of repertoire studied and performed during the last two years to your audition.
BM in Organ Performance: For the Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance, prepare three memorized contrasting works from different historical periods. Please bring to your audition a list of repertoire you have studied and performed during the last two years.

We prefer that you attend one of the above dates for the auditions. However, if you cannot come at the scheduled time, contact us by e-mail (Dr. Kimm Julian) or by phone at 507-389-2171 to schedule an individual audition.
Ensemble auditions are held on the first week of the fall semester for freshmen and transfer students. Please see the appropriate ensemble director to sign up for an audition time.

Private studio auditions are held from Monday – Wednesday during the first week of school. All incoming majors must audition for private lessons. See the appropriate teacher or look for a sign up sheet by the studios during orientation week to sign up for an audition.

Jazz Ensembles: Auditions for jazz band, jazz combo, and vocal jazz ensemble are open to all MSU students. All jazz auditions are held during the first week of classes in the Fall semester. Jazz groups require a full year commitment from all students participating in each ensemble. Specific audition information for each group/part is posted prior to auditions on the bulletin board adjacent to Performing Arts Building Room #226. Students planning to come to Minnesota State, University to major and minor in music should be able to read pitches (treble and/or bass clef), and basic rhythms.
