We are thrilled to invite you to nominate your students for the Minnesota State University, Mankato High School Honor Band to be held Friday, January 26, 2018 on the campus of Minnesota State, Mankato. The ensemble is open to all deserving students in the 10th - 12th grades. The day will include tours of the building, performances by Minnesota State, Mankato instrumental ensembles, rehearsals with the wind band faculty and clinics with the applied faculty.


The High School Honor Band will include approximately 80 musicians and will be conducted by Dr. Amy Roisum-Foley, Director of Bands and Mr. Michael C. Thursby, Director of Athletic Bands.

Amy K. Roisum Foley is currently in her 16th year as the Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Minnesota State University, Mankato where she administrates and conducts the concert bands and chamber ensembles. Her teaching also includes graduate and undergraduate conducting and instrumental music education. Roisum Foley has served as guest conductor and clinician for honor bands and festivals in the US, Canada, and Spain.

Roisum Foley received her Bachalor of Music in Music Education and Performance from St. Olaf College, her Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of St. Thomas Aquinas and her Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education and Wind Band Conducting from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Roisum Foley also enjoys building conducting batons during her free time.

Michael C. Thursby is in his 5th year as the Director of Athletic Bands and we are proud to announce that he has been promoted to Assistant Professor of Music. He teaches courses in percussion techniques, percussion performance, marching band techniques and assists with the Minnesota State Mankato instrumental ensembles. Thursby's musical training includes a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance and Music Education from at the University of Iowa and a Master of Music degree from University of Northern Iowa.

In the realm of marching arts, Professor Thursby has worked as a percussion instructor, arranger, and clinician throughout the Midwest, directing the percussion sections for the University of Iowa "Hawkeye Marching Band," and the UNI "Panther Marching Band." He also spent time marching in Drum Corps International and is a currently on staff with the Govenaires and River City Rhythm Drum and Bugle Corps.

Thursby has served as an adjudicator for the Minnesota Percussion Association and in several other circuits throughout the Midwest. He endorses and performs with Mapex and Majestic Percussion equipment, and Salyers Percussion. Top

Student Nominations

This year you have the option to nominate students online via the link above or using the band nomination form (via e-mail) for up to six students.  Please rank your students based upon your own criteria. Make sure you list each student’s full name and their specific instrument, i.e., Alto Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Treble Clef Baritone, including areas of strength for your Percussionists.  We will send out one copy of each selection of music for each student approximately at least four weeks prior to the event. Every school that submits a nomination form will be represented on stage. Please make sure to contact us if you do not receive a confirmation email acknowledging your student nominations. Top

Inclement Weather

Students should clear the entire day for rehearsals and the performance.  If a conflict should develop, please contact us as soon as possible so that we might contact an alternate nominee. If there is inclement weather on the day of the event, all ensemble directors will be notified by 6:00 am via cell phone and email. The cost of registration is $25 per student for the honor band. Students will receive the musical services of the conductors, lunch on campus, a reception following the concert, and a certificate. The concert is free of charge.Top

Registration Deadlines

Please note that the deadline for Honor Band nominations is November 13th, 2017. You can mail or email your nominations. You will receive an email notification upon receipt of your nomination form and the parts will be mailed out on December 12, 2017. If you have not received confirmation by mid-November, please contact us. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me or send me an email message. Teacher Workshops

Minnesota State University, Mankato music faculty will be providing mini-sessions that will count toward continuing education clock hours. Each teacher who takes part in these workshops will receive a certificate for your time. These workshops will be provided free-of-charge. Top
