Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Student Events Team has organized a four-day campus service and advocacy event, “Mavericks be the Change,” from Monday-Thursday, April 22-25 that encourages students to give back to their community through service and also to increase awareness of issues facing the campus and greater Mankato communities.

The event will be held each day on campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Centennial Student Union Lincoln Lounge.

During the week, four different campus offices or departments will present issues about which they seek to increase awareness, with a different office or department emphasized each day.

Participating campus offices/departments include:

  • Monday, April 22 – The Veterans Resource Center will provide participants a glimpse into the lives of real Maverick veterans through a guided interaction with current Minnesota State Mankato students. Participants will receive a card indicating what to ask veterans after saying, “Thank you for your service.”
  • Tuesday, April 23 – Women’s Center – Event will highlight bystander awareness and encourage students to pledge to volunteer with local charities that advocate for victims of sexual and domestic abuse.
  • Wednesday, April 24 – Community Engagement Office – Event will provide information on food insecurity and will include encouraging attendees to volunteer with Campus Kitchen and Mankato-area food recovery programs.
  • Thursday, April 25 – Counseling Center – Event will help students learn how to help other students cope with stress and highlight services available through the Counseling Center.

Minnesota State Mankato students who pledge to volunteer or help make a change will receive a free “Mavericks be the Change” T-shirt with inspirational quotes printed on the back.
