MANKATO – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Department of Theatre & Dance opens the 2022-2023 Theatre Season with “In the Next Room, or the vibrator play” in the Andreas Theatre at the Earley Center for the Performing Arts.

In his Victorian home, Dr. Givings has invented an extraordinary new device for treating “hysteria”: the vibrator. Adjacent to the doctor’s laboratory, his wife tries to tend to their newborn, wondering what is going on in the next room. When a new “hysterical” patient and her husband bring their own complicated relationship into the doctor’s home, Dr. and Mrs. Givings must examine the nature of their own marriage.

Director Sarah Honerman says this play encourages audiences to ask themselves these tough questions, “How do you communicate your desires and needs with those that you love? How do you allow your relationships to fill the void of isolation we would otherwise feel without other humans?”

“In the Next” runs Sept. 21-24, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. in the Andreas Theatre at the Earley Center for Performing Arts, Minnesota State University, Mankato. Tickets are $10 regular, $9 for seniors ages 65 and older and children under 16; and $5 for Minnesota State Mankato students.

The box office is open 4-6 p.m. weekdays in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available online at MSUTheatre.com or over the phone at 507-389-6661.

“Disney’s High School Musical” is next up in the Department of Theatre and Dance, Sept. 29-Oct. 9 in the Ted Paul Theatre.
