MANKATO – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Department of Theatre & Dance will open the 2019-2020 Mainstage Season with “Newsies” in the Ted Paul Theatre at the Early Center for the Performing Arts.

Based on the Disney film of the same name and set in turn-of-the 20th century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right!

This production includes a cast of Minnesota State Mankato undergraduate and graduate students and five community members. One of the visiting cast members is Miguel, a foreign exchange student from Spain who has performed professionally in “Billy Elliot the Musical.” The performance features a live pit orchestra and will be the last academic year musical directed by retiring department chair Paul J. Hustoles.

“Newsies” runs Sept. 26-28 and Oct. 3-5 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 5 & 6 at 2 p.m. in the Ted Paul Theatre at the Earley Center for Performing Arts, Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Tickets are $22 regular, $19 for seniors ages 65 and older, children under 16 and groups of 15 or more; and $15 for Minnesota State Mankato students.

The Box Office is open 4-6 p.m. weekdays in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center, or buy single tickets online at MSUTheatre.com. Call the Box Office at 507-389-6661.
