MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Department of Theatre & Dance will open the Mainstage season with Jonathan Larson’s “Rent,” Sept. 28-30 & Oct. 5-8, 2023.

The iconic rock musical that has captivated audiences around the world is returning to Minnesota State University, Mankato. Set in the vibrant and gritty East Village of New York City in the 1990s, “Rent” follows a group of friends struggling to make it in the face of poverty, homelessness and the specter of HIV/AIDS.  Facing the problems head on, they make personal self-discoveries and find what really matters most in life.

Director Vladimir Rovinsky notes that the theme of searching for human connection and love in the age of progressing social isolation, worldwide epidemics, and global cataclysms is something that will resonate with modern audiences.

“Rent” runs Sept. 28-30 and Oct. 5-7 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 7 & 8 at 2 p.m. in the Ted Paul Theatre at the Earley Center for Performing Arts, Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Tickets are $24 regular, $21 for seniors ages 65 and older, children under 16 and groups of 15 or more; and $5 for Minnesota State Mankato students. Season ticket packages are still available for purchase.

The Box Office is open 4-6 p.m. weekdays in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center, or tickets may be purchased single tickets online at MSUTheatre.com. The Box Office line is 507-389-6661.
