Why I want to be a Maverick Firsts Advocate

I was a first-generation and nontraditional student, I didn’t know where to begin. I had different issues come up, like how do you fill out a FAFSA, the transfer of credits, and not knowing where to go for help as an online student. What often saved me was the benefit of being an employee and having coworkers to point me in the right direction. It was then that I realized how fortunate I was to have this help, but concerned about our younger students who didn’t? Having worked in TRiO at South Central College before coming to MSU, I saw firsthand all the little issues that were non-academic (car breaking down, renting an apartment, daycare, food insecurity, taxes, insurance, etc…) the things they don’t teach us in high school became a challenge for students who didn’t have help from their peers. As a first generation, non-traditional student I want to help students navigate their way through these unfamiliar waters of college and help relieve some anxiety.

Other information about me

I have one daughter, that when she started college in the Fall 2015, I was able to go back and finish my degree.

Here is an article published in the Mankato Free Press that will give you a little more insight into my journey.

In my free time I love going to concerts, enjoy the outdoors, camping, movies, hockey, and football.
