Why I want to be a Maverick Firsts Advocate

As a first-generation college student, myself, I keenly remember figuring it all out on my own, without guidance from my parents. While my parents were super supportive of me going to college, they didn’t know anything about registering for classes, the resources available, or college life.

I also remember feeling uncomfortable in classes where it seemed like everyone else had more money and connections than I did. Knowing that I wasn’t alone would have been a game-changer for me. You aren’t alone!

I never took advantage of career services while in college. When I graduated, I moved back home and worked part-time at a deli. I didn’t have a clue how to find a career-type job or how to behave in a professional office. As a result of my experiences, I am passionate about helping students prepare for professional success and an inspiring career.

Other items of interest

  • Internships and part-time jobs are one of the best ways to develop as a professional and prepare for a great post-college job! My Master’s thesis was about learning from on-campus jobs, and I would love to help you find a great internship/job or to chat with you about your current job and how it can help you!
  • I’m a skating member of Mankato’s roller derby team! Derby is a wildly fun, team-based, full-contact sport with female-identifying people of all ages, body types, and backgrounds. Let me know if you’re interested in playing or watching.
  • AmeriCorps is how I launched my post-college career, and it helped finance my grad school education. I’d love to talk with you about this paid service program.
