Licensing in Athletic Training
Currently, 49 states and the District of Columbia regulate the practice of athletic training (CA does not regulate athletic training). Regulatory information across all states can be found in the State Regulation component of the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer website. Individuals must be legally credentialed by the appropriate state agency prior to practicing athletic training.
Graduates of the CAATE-accredited M.S. in Athletic Training program at Minnesota State Mankato are eligible for the Board of Certification Examination. Successful completion of the Board of Certification Examination is recognized by all athletic trainer state regulatory agencies as meeting their credentialing examination requirements.
Individual state regulatory agencies may require additional administrative items (background checks, fees, letters of reference, forms, etc.) beyond the successful completion of the Board of Certification Examination. The responsibility of completing those steps are the responsibility of the applicant, not the Minnesota State University M.S. in Athletic Training degree program. Compliance with state regulatory requirements is the only legal avenue to practice athletic training in those jurisdictions that regulate the profession.
