Bias is when someone treats others unfairly based on traits like race, gender, sexual orientation or identity. It can show up in words or actions that make someone feel disrespected or discriminated against.

Be an Active Bystander: Tips for Reporting a Bias Incident
- Ensure Safety First: If there's an immediate threat, remove yourself and others from danger. Call University Security at 507-389-2111 or dial 9-1-1.
- Document the Incident: If safe to do so, take photos or video, and gather names of witnesses. Never put yourself at risk.
- Submit Evidence: Share documentation through the Bias Incident Report Form or email University Security at security@mnsu.edu.
- Save Your Files: Back up any supporting materials in multiple places (e.g., phone, email, cloud) for future reference.

Minnesota State University, Mankato acknowledges protected classes as those protected by the Minnesota Human Rights Act, Federal Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and Federal Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA).
The Core Team is convened as needed in response to incidents. Additional members may be included based on the situation—for example, if a student organization is involved, a Student Activities representative will participate.
The full Team also meets at least twice each semester to review policies, procedures, and response effectiveness.

The Bias Incident Support and Advisory Team includes members from key campus offices and reports to the Vice President of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. Team members are available to receive reports of bias or hate and provide support.
