The North Star Promise Scholarship creates a tuition- and fee-free pathway to higher education for qualifying Minnesota students. It’s a “last-dollar” scholarship, meaning it covers any remaining tuition and mandatory fees.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a Minnesota resident
- Have a family adjusted gross income below $80,000 (as reported on your completed FAFSA or Minnesota Alternative State Financial Aid Application
- Must be admitted to Minnesota State Mankato and enrolled in at least one credit in a program or course of study leading to a degree, diploma or certificate
What is Covered by the Award:
The North Star Promise covers up to 100% of remaining base tuition and mandatory fees after other gift aid is applied.
Gift aid includes: scholarships, grants, stipends and tuition waivers. Loans and work-study do not reduce the North Star Promise award.
What is NOT COVERED by the Award:
- Housing and food
- Books and supplies
- Transportation
- Tuition differentials or surcharges
- Other costs beyond eligible base tuition and mandatory fees

How Does "Last-Dollar" Work:
North Star Promise is calculated after other gift aid has been applied to eligible tuition and fees.
Example:
- Eligible tuition and mandatory fees: $10,000
- Grants and Scholarships: $8,000
- North Star Promise: $2,000
- Remaining eligible tuition and fees: $0
The actual award varies by student and is calculated by the college or university.
